The format alone does not make an assessment authentic or rigorous. A group project can conceal individual understanding; a multiple-choice exam can assess complex reasoning when options represent plausible decisions. Define the evidence first, then choose the format.
Examples by course context
- Introductory database course: diagnose a flawed schema, normalize selected tables, and explain two design decisions.
- Nursing course: complete a structured patient simulation, document priorities, and justify the handoff.
- History seminar: compare interpretations using a curated set of primary sources and defend a conclusion.
- Statistics course: select and perform an analysis on a supplied dataset, then communicate limitations.
- Teacher education: design a short learning sequence, teach one segment, and annotate revisions after feedback.
- Business strategy: recommend a course of action under constraints and respond to a short oral challenge.
Turn an example into an assessment
- Select one or two outcomes that genuinely belong together.
- Describe the observable product or performance students must produce.
- Specify conditions: time, collaboration, resources, tools, and permitted assistance.
- Create criteria that distinguish accuracy, reasoning, communication, and discipline-specific quality.
- Provide a lower-stakes opportunity to practise the unfamiliar parts of the task.
- Plan how feedback and results will be released and what students should do with them.
Use multiple pieces of evidence when a decision is consequential. A single timed exam may be appropriate for some outcomes, but combining it with a project, performance, or portfolio often produces a more defensible picture of achievement.
