Diagnostic assessment: find the starting point before teaching

A diagnostic assessment gathers evidence about students’ current knowledge, skills, strategies, and misconceptions before new instruction or a major learning sequence. Its purpose is not to rank students. It helps an instructor choose an appropriate starting point.

Diagnostic assessment is most valuable when the result changes a decision: whether to review a prerequisite, form temporary support groups, offer an alternate explanation, adjust the pace, or direct students to targeted preparation. A pre-test that is collected but never used is merely an activity.

Diagnostic assessment examples

  • A five-question prerequisite check before the first statistics lab.
  • A concept map showing relationships among key terms before a new unit.
  • A short writing sample used to identify patterns for upcoming instruction.
  • A worked problem with a request to explain each decision, not only provide the answer.
  • A misconception inventory using plausible statements students must evaluate.
  • A confidence rating paired with each answer to separate uncertainty from confident misunderstanding.
  • A brief interview, demonstration, or think-aloud for a complex practical skill.

Design a useful diagnostic assessment

  1. Name the prerequisite knowledge or misconception that would materially affect the next lesson.
  2. Use a small number of focused prompts; diagnostic value matters more than broad coverage.
  3. Include questions that reveal reasoning. Incorrect answers alone do not explain the source of difficulty.
  4. Tell students how the information will be used and whether it affects a grade. Low stakes usually produce more honest evidence.
  5. Decide responses in advance: review, extension, targeted resource, regrouping, or individual follow-up.
  6. Collect only information you can interpret and act on promptly.

In higher education, diagnostics are especially useful when cohorts enter with varied preparation: introductory quantitative courses, bridging programs, second-language learning, prerequisite-heavy science, and professional programs. They can also help experienced students avoid unnecessary review.

Interpretation cautions

  • A short diagnostic samples only part of a domain; avoid broad labels such as “weak student.”
  • Language, accessibility, unfamiliar format, or anxiety may affect performance.
  • One response should guide a hypothesis, not become a permanent judgment.
  • Share the next step with students so the assessment becomes useful to them as well as the instructor.
